What is a Content Delivery Network [CDN]?
A Content Delivery Network [CDN] is a geographically dispersed system of interconnected servers connected to the Internet that serve your web content to your end users.
When your end user makes a request on your web site for your CDN-enabled content, complex routing and DNS algorithms intelligently establish the location of the end user and then direct the request for your content to the optimal CDN server node. The optimal serving CDN node is typically one that is nearest to the end user in network terms [please note that the nearest network proximity is not necessarily the geographically nearest], has the most bandwidth and capacity available, the least expensive serving location, or a combination thereof.
Use of a CDN can bring a number of very real, tangible benefits to any Internet-orientated business.
First and foremost, the inherent characteristics of a geographically dispersed, carrier-grade, highly connected, highly scalable, and resilient CDN infrastructure allows customers to mitigate the risks and counter the unpredictability of operating a business or service on the Internet.
More tangible advantages for you and your business are:
- Improved End-user experience - The CDN ensures that the requested content reaches your end-user as quickly as possible.
- Scalability - You have the dependable use of a network that is significantly scaled and effectively over-provisioned, capable of comfortably handling traffic surges and unpredictable rapid traffic growth that you may experience for your content and services.
- Geographic Reach - The international geographic distribution of the CDN gives you an active serving local presence in, or near to, every major end-user target market in the world.
- Availability - Multiple active CDN nodes carrying and serving your content minimizes site timeouts and maximizes site response times, mitigating the risk of server overload, server or node failure, Internet congestion or cable system failure.
- Time to Market - The CDN represents a ready-made on-demand distribution network for you. There is no need for downtime or build-out time in order to deploy an infrastructure capable of supporting new products or services.
Media Motion Online provides you content delivery through a world-class CDN with servers in countries throughout the world.

At Media Motion Online, we have banded together with other companies to purchase terabytes of streaming capabilities every month through our CDNs. | What makes you better than the other guys?
A lot of people use the Media Motion CDN simply because of our price.
But we also find that people use Media Motion because we provide a complete package -
- we have software to help you manage your media content
- we have graphical reporting that is available as pre-set templates or can be customized on the fly
- for those that require it, we have role-based permissions to restrict or allow viewing.
- Also. because we use a world-class content delivery network when we stream your digital assets.
We aren't some small want-to-be streamer with a few streaming servers. When you use Media Motion Online, your media content is streamed through a Content Delivery Network [CDN] with servers in countries throughout the world.
| What are the types of streaming?
1. Streaming Method:
With the Streaming Method, your video or audio media is played immediately, as it delivered to the computer, without being saved on the computer's hard drive. This provides an inherent security benefit over the Progressive Download Method.
Unlike the Progressive Download Method which always attempts to deliver the entire video, the Streaming Method is far more efficient. The Streaming Method only delivers as much of your media as is used. This allows for accurate usage reporting and saves significantly on bandwidth costs.
The Streaming Method supports both real-time and on-demand [archived] delivery of your media content.
Using Media Motion Online, your video and audio content will be delivered on a world-class Content Delivery Network [CDN]. The Media Motion CDN provides servers in countries throughout the world. With this distributed service, you avoid the significant investment in the hardware and Internet connection speed that is usually associated with streaming your media content.
Media Motion Online provides a 99.9999% streaming delivery guarantee.
Media Motion Online delivers web video and audio that supports all of the major streaming formats including Flash, Windows Media, QuickTime, MPEG-4, Real, and H.264 compression. That means that your users automatically receive the best video and audio quality for their bandwidth.
2. Progressive Download [PD] Method:
The video or audio file is downloaded, but viewing can begin once a small portion of the file is buffered to the user's computer. Viewing/listening can potentially start quite quickly if the available bandwidth is larger than the video data-rate. PD does not support real-time live video.
Progressive Downloads does not allow the user to skip forward within the file beyond what has already been downloaded.
A full download of the file is attempted with each and every user - regardless of whether the user watches/listens to any of the file. This forces the Content Delivery Network [CDN] to report on what has been downloaded instead of what has been viewed.
The Progressive Download Method allows the downloaded file to be easily copied, modified, or re-used without permission.
The Progressive Download Method usually has a single encoded bit-rate, resulting a compromised one-size-fits-all approach to video quality.
The Progressive Download Method is widely used today because it's easy and the user experience simulates the "instant on" of streaming (when bandwidth allows). Because users have learned to accept small video windows with horrible quality, progressive download is the norm throughout the various low-end "tube" sites.
Besides the horrible quality and association with the various low-end "tube" sites, the biggest challenge with the Progressive Download Method is the void in reporting what was downloaded versus what was watched/listened to. Especially when comparing the Progressive Download Method to the Streaming Method where all the content is delivered to the user and is accurately reported on.
| Can your CDN handle my volume?
We are reasonably certain that our CDN can handle your volume.
As an example of the volume that we have handled in the past, during the Michael Jackson Memorial Service in July 2009, over 1 million unique users watched 2.7 million live streams of the memorial service, and cumulative successful stream time exceeded 94.8 million minutes throughout the day. Exceptional user experiences, including high quality and no buffering, were delivered through our CDN, as evidenced by reliable streams that averaged 90 minutes in viewing time per user.
Also, as a testament to the global reach of our CDN, nearly 40 percent of the viewers of the Jackson Memorial Service were from outside the United States. This data was collected through precision reporting tools and real-time analytics from our management portal.
A second example of the volume that we have handled in the past is the Inaugural Coverage of the swearing-in ceremony of our nation's 44th President, Barack Obama, in January 2009. During that ceremony, the number of concurrent viewers watching live video streams over our CDN reached its peak at more than 625,000 and 310 Gbps of bandwidth.
So unless you believe that your Live Event will have more that 625,000 concurrent viewers - or that you will need to stream more than 95,000,000 minutes during the day - then then answer is "Yes, we are reasonably certain that our CDN can handle your volume".
| Is there really not a long term contract?
Absolutely not.
We provide our CDN service to you on a day-to-day basis. You start using our CDN when you upload and start streaming your rich media content. You stop using our service when you take your content off of our CDN.
We believe that we provide the best CDN at the lowest price with exceptional service. If you are not 100% satisfied with any of those 3 items, then you can quit using our CDN service at any time.
There are no cancellation fees. You only pay for the streaming and storage that you use. So to stop using our service, to avoid any future costs, simply take your rich media content off of our CDN.
That may sound easy. But we feel it only fair to warn you. We work very hard for each and every one of our customers. We are extremely confident that you will love our product and service - otherwise we couldn't provide this No Contract offer.
| Do you really not have a monthly minimum charge?
That is true. We do not have a minimum monthly charge.
We do invoice on a monthly basis. By that, we mean that at the end of each month, we charge your credit card for the amount of streaming and storage that you actually used.
But we do not charge a minimum charge each month. You simply pay for the streaming and storage that you actually use.
It really is that simple.
| OK. Then what about expensive "overage charges" like the other CDN providers have?
No. Sorry if we disappoint, but we don't have "overage charges".
By way of explanation about what an "overage charge" is.
Many other CDN companies not only charge a "minimum monthly fee" for their service based on a contracted amount of streaming and storage that you think that you will use. These other CDN companies also have been known to have "overage charges". These "overage charges" can be quite expensive and kick in if your usage volume is more than the plan that you contracted for. It's their way of forcing you to pay more every month - whether you need the usage or not.
At Media Motion, we don't work that way. We have no overage charges. The low price that you pay per GB when you use Media Motion is the price that you pay.
Remember, you only pay for the streaming and storage that you actually use - and all at the same low price per GB.
| Can I setup my own Live Stream?
Absolutely.
Through your management console, you can quickly and easily set up your own Live Stream.
And that Live Stream is immediately available for you to use.
Many other CDN companies require that you go through them to setup a Live Stream. They even ask that you provide them with 24 to 48 hours of notice.
Not at Media Motion. It may be our CDN, but it is your convenience. This is 2012.
| Can your CDN handle HD - high definition media?
Yes.
The Media Motion CDN is one of the best in the industry, offering high-speed delivery and massive capacity. Our CDN network was designed from the ground up to support streaming media and the delivery of high-definition content. While the industry debates the true definition of HD, arguing file size and bit rates, the consumer only knows that when they see it, they know it.
We encourage you to contact Media Motion about putting HD content on your web site. We will work with you to optimize the experience you provide your customers, while resting assured knowing you have the advantage of our silky-smooth, rock-solid delivery.
| Do you have any tools to help us manage our videos?Absolutely!
We have our own video asset management platform that allows you to manage your videos with a simple point and click. You can see a little bit more about the Media Motion Online video asset management platform by clicking here.
We also can work with you to integrate video players such as the JW Player by Longtail Video. | Can you provide access to just 1 CDN?No.
We actually can provide you with access to either the Internap or the Amazon CDNs.
There are advantages to each CDN.
Please contact us so that we can talk about your specific streaming requirements - whether you need to stream Live or On-Demand - Single Stream or Adaptive Bitrate - Multi-Protocol or not - mostly to USA/Europe or mostly to Asia or mostly to South America - etc.
We will work with you and provide the best streaming solution for your needs at the lowest possible price - and with absolutely the best support and service in the industry! | Do you offer Mobile Streaming?Absolutely!
As you know, Mobile Streaming provides the ability for you to load 1 high quality copy of a video to the CDN or, for Live streaming, to provide 1 high quality video stream to the CDN. The CDN then automatically streams to your viewer in either Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming [Flash HDS], Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming [f4m], or Apple iOS for iPhone/iPad Streaming via .m3u8 files.
Our Mobile Streaming is currently released and ready to go. We can stream not only to desktops, but also to Android and Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad.
And you don't need some expensive encoder to provide the Live stream. We can show you how to use the free version of Adobe Live Media Encoder to provide an H.264, f4v stream that will work just fine. And you only have to send us 1 H.264 video file. We will take that 1 video file and convert it into the MP4, m3u8, and f4m codecs.
So the question you need to ask yourself is: "Is your streaming reaching mobile viewers?" |
