1. Streaming Method:

With the Streaming Method, your video or audio media is played immediately, as it delivered to the computer, without being saved on the computer's hard drive. This provides an inherent security benefit over the Progressive Download Method.

Unlike the Progressive Download Method which always attempts to deliver the entire video, the Streaming Method is far more efficient. The Streaming Method only delivers as much of your media as is used. This allows for accurate usage reporting and saves significantly on bandwidth costs.

2. Progressive Download [PD] Method:

The video or audio file is downloaded, but viewing can begin once a small portion of the file is buffered to the user's computer. Viewing/listening can potentially start quite quickly if the available bandwidth is larger than the video data-rate. PD does not support real-time live video.

Progressive Downloads does not allow the user to skip forward within the file beyond what has already been downloaded.

A full download of the file is attempted with each and every user - regardless of whether the user watches/listens to any of the file. This forces the Content Delivery Network [CDN] to report on what has been downloaded instead of what has been viewed.

The Progressive Download Method allows the downloaded file to be easily copied, modified, or re-used without permission.

The Progressive Download Method usually has a single encoded bit-rate, resulting a compromised one-size-fits-all approach to video quality.

The Progressive Download Method is widely used today because it's easy and the user experience simulates the "instant on" of streaming (when bandwidth allows). As you know, Mobile Streaming provides the ability for you to load 1 high quality copy of a video to the CDN or, for Live streaming, to provide 1 high quality video stream to the CDN.  The CDN then automatically streams to your viewer in either Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming [Flash HDS], Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming [f4m], or Apple iOS for iPhone/iPad Streaming via .m3u8 files.
